Formation:
The Special Carpet Company Ltd
was formed in November 2002:
Telford-based 'The Special Carpet
Company Ltd' is the brainchild of Nigel Booth, and utilises the latest in
lean and agile management techniques to set a competitive edge in its
marketplace, providing high quality products in a wide variety of styles.
Nigel, who lives in Apley -
Telford, left his job as a director of a Kidderminster-based carpet company
to start up The Special Carpet Company Ltd - ie. he decided to realise
his dream of running his own retail carpet business having gained
appreciable inside knowledge of the carpet manufacturing and retail
industry,
With absolute perfection in mind he
decided to call his holding company - The Special Carpet Company Ltd.
Nigel says – before forming The
Special Carpet Company Ltd I did considerable research and found that
when you walk into most retailers:
-
The array of products and pricing
logic is very confusing. Why does some carpet in the store look identical
to other carpet yet it is being sold at a fraction of the price ?
-
Sales representatives are often
too occupied talking to themselves or other customers to give you the
special attention you deserve and if you are not prepared to patiently
wait around then you have to leave frustrated.
-
Sales representatives have very
little manufacturing product knowledge and are generally focussed on a
quick sale. ( ie. When Nigel asked them technical questions about the
carpet - some of the replies were self fabricated and utter nonsense)
-
When lured to a retail outlet by
an advertisement promising very cheap carpet. - Nigel found the carpet had
limited availability and was probably only advertised to get
potential customers into their store - ie. Such a technique appears common
and is known in the carpet trade as ‘bait and switch’. Cheap
carpet had very little colour choice or is sometimes ‘seconds/reject
carpet’ or manufacturers roll end waste or even non guaranteed
‘jobbed’carpet from struggling manufacturers whose quality standards are
as a consequence suspect.
-
Nigel found that large retail
chains were are often staffed by sales personnel with little or no carpet
product knowledge, Within this area the pricing, advertising and point of
sale were relied upon heavily to sell the carpet. And most of the Sales
personnel received bonus on the amount of carpet they sold rather than
achieving a satisfied customer.
.
-
He also found that Independent
carpet retailers were often run by ex or practicing carpet fitters who
could fit a carpet but had no idea of different carpet constructions and
their associated product quality levels.
-
Nigel found that some retailers were prepared to sell cheap synthetic or poor quality wool
carpet and make all their profit from the fitting charges and over priced
grippers, delivery charges and poor quality underlay.
-
Nigel's experience told him that
Manufacturers and the National Institute of Carpet & Floor Layers felt the
majority of carpet fitters were untrained ‘and so very suspect' carpet
fitters.
-
He also found that 'the man in the
van' carpet fitters only sell cheap low quality carpet from samples
provided by third party
resellers – ie. this is because the top manufacturers and the better
quality carpet wholesalers will
not deal with home based fitters. So when after sales carpet complaints
arise manufacturers involvement is often non existent - and the fitter has
no way of satisfactorily resolving justifiable
complaints..
-
When most carpet retailers and all
independent carpet fitters receive carpet the first inspection it gets
is when it is cut and fitted on their customers floor.
The top
5 attributes of The Special Carpet Company Ltd/All Floors 'n' Rugs that make
it special are:
-
The company is 100% customer
focussed at all times.
-
The carpet companies The Special
Carpet Company Ltd deals with are all specially selected world class
carpet manufacturing companies who provide quality guaranteed products. Then from such world class
manufacturing companies Nigel Booth, using his in depth manufacturing
experience, selects and promotes ranges of special carpet that excel with
regard to value for money, product construction, colour and styling.
-
The company has deliberately been
set up in a lean and agile way and practices modern management improvement
techniques to ensure it continually retains its competitive edge with
regard to customer value for money with regard to product quality and
service. It uses a computer package to estimate the precises amount of
floor coverings required.
-
The Special Carpet Company is an
associate member of the National Institute of Carpet & Floor Layers (NICF) and
thus at all times promotes the NICF’s very high standards of carpet
fitting.
-
The Special Carpet Company is a
member of the Carpet Foundation - a group that promotes British Carpet
Manufacturing Companies and as a consequence its Sales Terms and
Procedures are Office of Fair Trading Approved.
